WAMO 2023 ChiangMai|A New Era of Great Voyages! Road to WAMO Teaser

01
Foreword
In 2023, the world is facing increasing tension and conflicts. Geopolitical disputes are intensifying, coordination mechanisms are failing, extreme weather events are more frequent, and the emerging challenges of AI safety have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future.
Despite these challenges, new technologies and arts are flourishing beneath the surface. Innovations like Web3, AI, and the metaverse are opening doors to a potential digital utopia, showing us the way forward. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for us to engage in discussions and explore solutions that focus on positive externalities!
We are currently undergoing a period comparable to the Age of Discovery, which took place between the 15th and 17th centuries. During that time, there were individuals who resisted the existing societal norms. They passionately embraced new sailing technologies, embarked on daring voyages to far-off lands, and eagerly sought the realization of their vision for a new world. This is where we find ourselves again, where groundbreaking technological advancements and innovative thinkers are challenging established paradigms. People today are similarly pushing boundaries, exploring uncharted territories, and striving for a future shaped by their imaginative ideas and innovative spirit.
In today’s Age of Discovery, innovation surges at the intersection of technology and humanities. These modern pioneers are like ‘cyber’ Zheng He’s, venturing into uncharted digital realms, or ‘crypto’ Amelia Earharts, exploring new and dangerous paths. They channel the spirit of Ada Lovelace, revolutionizing the applications and potential uses of the metaverse. We are these contemporary explorers. We are idealist digital nomads, united within tech communities, delving into humanities topics and creating innovative social solutions together, shaping a future with limitless possibilities. Together we are sailing towards the “Grand Line” in pursuit of a better tomorrow.
With guiding values of openness, mutual benefit, collaboration, and open source, WAMO can enable this new era. This is the road to WAMO!
What is WAMO?
For hundreds of years, mythical guardian beasts called ‘WAMO’ sat on Chinese roof ridges and front doors. These figures carried profound meaning. Historically, WAMO acted as a protector, warding off disasters and inviting prosperity through its open mouth, symbolizing the collection of wealth. Today, WAMO signifies a spirit of collaboration, open-source innovation, and the collection of shared knowledge. It represents our dedication to positive externalities, emphasizing the value created when collective wisdom and collaborative efforts combine.

WAMO Principles:
Actions with positive externalities
Support and facilitate collaboration
Open, mutual benefit, and open source
Inspire each other, act synergistically
Give ample freedom, don’t set boundaries
Facilitate consensus building across paradigms

What is the Road to WAMO?
October and November Events — Leading up to WAMO 2023 in Chiang Mai
Before WAMO 2023 Chiang Mai, a series of Road to WAMO activities are scheduled, aimed at spreading the WAMO spirit in Chiang Mai.
These events will include academic conferences, Southeast Asian social technology topics, creative writing camps, global digital art group exhibitions, and more. Specifically, the goal of these events is to explore how technological updates change social structures similarly to the Age of Discovery. We’ll also delve into the impact of creative expressions, such as art and writing, on our thoughts and perspectives, akin to the transformative influence of the Renaissance*.* Ultimately these discussions provide more imagination for WAMO 2023 Chiang Mai.
The Road to WAMO features both online and offline events merging humanistic arts with Web3 technologies. These events serve as a social experiment, exploring new ways of working together in the digital age, all guided by the principle of positive externalities.
On the road to WAMO, we focus on:
- Collaborative future: Ecological innovation with tools
- Reality rush: Decentralized production era
- Inquiring Asia Pacific: Tech life and social practice
- South Seas culture: Artistic presentation of real-life
With the sounds of the lush Thailand rainy season slowly fading away, it is time to join us on the Road to WAMO.
Why is The Road to WAMO important? The purpose of life isn’t a destination or a big event. Instead, it is the journey where the most joy is found, and the real work is often done — in dreaming, planning, and imagining. In this way, we are always on this journey, always on the Road to WAMO.
